A poor performance in the last of the three-match ODI series against India made matters worse for the African country. The team that has only once before been bowled out on a score as low as 99, and that too never against a subcontinent side, was in a state of disarray on Tuesday.

India dominated not only the match but also the competition between the two sides, winning both the T20 series and the ODI series 2-1. Mohammed Siraj turned out to be the trump card for India in the series and potentially for the ODI World Cup next year at home. He took 5 wickets at an average of 20.80 in the three-match ODI series, hence becoming the man of the series.

The spinning quadrant of Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed and Ravi Bhisnoi was not far behind as they too contributed significantly, claiming 13 wickets combined. While the Indian bowling department was up to their level, the South Africans were struggling to get their footing in the game. This causes a concern for them as major ICC tournaments are fast approaching and they are not even at the position in the ODI championship to qualify for the World Cup directly.

The series was a reality check for South Africa and this has led to Mark Boucher, South Africa’s Head Coach, resigning from the position post the T20 World Cup. Even though their, batting department has chipped in at most points, they too have let them down at crucial junctions of the series. Miller was their standout performer with bat in both the T20 and ODI series. Even though he was not the top scorer for them in both series, he still contributed at an average of 125 and 117 respectively, helping them at least not give in so quickly.

For India, it's just testing the depth of the waters, in their rooster with talent popping up from all corners of the country, ready to explode onto the scene. Ishan Kisan was already getting himself into the mix of things, while Shahbaz Ahmed was the new find. Sanju Samson also threw his name in the hat, with a good batting display, especially with a trailblazing attempt to chase down the target in the first ODI with so little. He scored 86 runs in 63 balls at a strike rate of 136.51.
