Jesus Navas Speaks on Sevilla FC's Turbulent Season: From Europa Glory to Domestic Challenges

As the referee blew his final whistle, on the night of 1 June, 2023, the atmosphere at Hungary's Puskas Arena went wild with cheers erupting from a fervent section of the crowd. Sevilla FC had just clinched its seventh Europa League title, defying Jose Mourinho's Roma in a nail-biting penalty shootout. As we snap back to the present day, the same crowd can be seen yet again biting its nails, but this time because of the crisis their club is going through.

From the realisation of European dreams to the nightmares of the Spanish league, thus has been the year for the fans of Sevilla FC. The club’s European success seems to have done a damning job of masking the inefficient tactics and waning individual abilities.

And despite the urgent requirement for the club to revamp its ageing squad, the club is determined to go through its eventual plans to renovate its iconic stadium, Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, from where the club president plans to extract EUR 30-50 million more in ticket sales every year.

Currently sitting 14th in the table and just six points clear of the relegation zone, Sevilla FC doesn’t have the time to sit down and relax, because the job looks far from done. The club, despite having only lost three matches out of the last ten league games, is closer to relegation than securing a European Championship spot.

However, the major cause of concern for Los Nervionenses is stemming from its headline-grabbing manager. And so, Quique Sanchez Flores, the current manager of Sevilla FC - who is also the second manager to be appointed in the ongoing season after the termination of Sampioli in September - doesn’t seem to be the favourite to retain his job.

Somehow, Flores was in the spotlight not only for his tactical shortcomings on the field, but also for a possible case of discontent in the locker room. A touchline bust-up between him and Moroccan ace Youssef En-Nesyri, in Sevilla’s league match against Celta Vigo, had flared tensions in the locker. En-Nesyri is Sevilla’s top scorer in the league this season, but post this, he might be dissuaded from continuing for another season at the club.

Speaking on the matter, club captain and legend, Jesus Navas was quick to deny any kind of discontent in the team while praising the manager. In a select Indian media interaction, he told The Guy in Stands, “The dynamics of the team remain good, we have been gaining points and the manager has got a lot of experience under him. We all remain united, and he’s a fantastic manager.”

Later the situation was also played down by En-Nesyri as well. “The truth is that nothing has happened. It was just a hard substitution,” Nesyri had told Spanish media. “It is the nerves of the game. He knows that I always want to help my team. Since we were 1-0, I didn’t want to go out. I was focused on scoring and leaving team well.” However, only time will tell whether he will remain with the club beyond this season.

While Sevilla FC’s captain accepted that the club is going through a complicated season, he remained confident about the player’s commitment to the team. “Going ahead I think we just need to maintain ourselves as a big group and maintain our confidence while continuing to improve. And at the end of the day, while it remains a complicated year, I’m sure that the team and our enthusiasm remain ever so strong,” he added.

Jesus Navas Gonzalez, the oldest player to represent the Spanish colours is completing his second stint at the club, since his move back from the English Champions Manchester City. The 38-year-old’s contract with his boyhood club will be running out by the end of the season, but he continues to show no signs of slowing down.

He said, “I always want to improve and enjoy my football. My love for the game is what keeps me going. I am going to continue focusing on the season in hand first (on retirement). But playing for Sevilla (for such a long time) and also the Spanish national team was the dream.”

Jesus has over 500 appearances for the Andalusian club and has had the rare opportunity to train in a stadium - Estadio Jesus Navas - named after him by the club even before he retired.
